What Age Should Kids Learn Table Manners? A Guide for Connecticut Parents

It's one of the most common questions we hear from parents across Fairfield and Westchester Counties: when is the right time to start teaching my child table manners? The reassuring answer is that there is no single magic age — manners are layered in gradually, and almost any age is a good age to begin the next appropriate step.

What changes with age isn't whether to teach manners, but which manners to focus on. Here's how we think about it.

Ages 2–5: The Foundation Years

Toddlers and preschoolers are ready for the basics, taught through repetition and gentle modeling rather than formal instruction. At this stage, the goal is warmth and consistency, not perfection.

  • Saying "please" and "thank you" without being prompted
  • Staying seated for the length of a short meal
  • Using a napkin and basic utensils
  • Waiting until everyone is served before eating

Ages 6–11: The Sweet Spot

This is the age range Greer Etiquette focuses on — and for good reason. Children between six and eleven are old enough to understand why manners matter, yet still young enough to absorb new habits naturally, before self-consciousness sets in. This is when hands-on dining practice with real place settings makes a lasting impression.

  • Navigating a full place setting — which fork, which glass, and why
  • Polite conversation: making introductions, asking questions, listening
  • Writing a proper thank-you note
  • Handling a formal multi-course meal with confidence rather than dread

Ages 12 and Up: Polish and Real-World Application

Older children and teens benefit from refining these skills in real settings — a restaurant, a formal event, a college interview down the road. By now manners should feel less like rules and more like quiet confidence.

The Bottom Line

Start early, keep it warm, and add complexity as your child grows. If you'd like to give your child structured, hands-on practice in the six-to-eleven sweet spot, that's exactly what we do — at clubs, schools, camps, and private classes throughout Fairfield and Westchester Counties.
